Storing apples
Apples are best stored in their packaging in the fridge, where you can expect them to stay fresh and crunchy for several weeks. Keeping a moist cloth in the crisper bin can improve their storage life further. Different varieties of apples can be stored for different lengths of time. For example, Granny Smith and Cripps Pink apples keep particularly well.
You may have heard the saying, “one bad apple can spoil the bunch”. Well, it’s true. Bruised or damaged apples release extra ethylene gas, which speeds up the ripening of other apples and fruit around them. So, handle apples with care and remove any damaged apples to prevent others from becoming overripe.
Preparing apples
Before eating an apple, rinse it thoroughly in water while gently scrubbing the skin with a natural bristle brush.
Apple skin is unusually rich in nutrients, so even if the recipe you’ve chosen suggests using peeled apples, consider leaving the skin on.
To prevent sliced apples turning brown, put the slices in a bowl of cold water with a spoonful of lemon juice, or sprinkle diluted lemon juice over them.
