This special dessert apple is distinguished by its bold, pink-red striped skin. Its attractive appearance, crisp texture and sweet flesh make it a very popular apple. They’re usually best eaten fresh, but can also be used in pies or sauces. Royal Galas were first cultivated in New Zealand in the 1930s and are redder than the original Gala variety. They got their name when Queen Elizabeth visited New Zealand and declared it to be her favorite apple.
Golden Delicious apples were discovered by accident in an American orchard in 1890. They can range from pale green to golden yellow in colour, and are speckled with light brown spots, called lenticels (these are pores that the fruit breathes through). These firm, crisp apples have white flesh with an aromatic, tart flavor. They’re a very versatile apple, and their thin skins make them an excellent choice for apple pies and crumbles. But, be gentle with them! They’re one of the most delicate apples and are easily bruised.
This apple is named after the old Australian lady who discovered it. According to some stories, Maria Ann Smith, affectionately known as ‘Granny’ Smith, used to throw the cores of French crabapples out of her kitchen window while making apple pie. Granny Smith decided to cultivate the apple tree that sprang up beneath her windowsill and found it to be good for eating and cooking. Today it’s one of the world’s favorite apples. It can be used for everything from snacking to salads to sauces, and from baking to beverages. The hard green skin delivers a pleasing crunch and the juicy flesh is deliciously tart.
Cripps Pink is one of the most popular varieties of apple today. In fact, it’s sometimes called the Queen of Apples. These Australian apples, introduced in the 1980s, have a delightful pink blush and firm, crisp flesh. Their flavor is exceptionally tangy and sweet, with notes of honey. They’re ideal for eating fresh and they brown slowly, so work well for fruit salad. Their high sugar content also makes them good for pies and sauces. Cripps Pink can be stored for three months or more in a fridge. To enjoy them at their best, eat them at room temperature.
Braeburn are beautiful bicoloured apples, with red or orange vertical streaks on a yellow or green background. They were discovered by accident in the 1950s by a farmer in New Zealand. These large apples have a delicious combination of spicy, sweet and tart flavors, with a hint of pear and cinnamon. They have a crisp skin and juicy, yellow flesh. They’re excellent for cooking, as they hold their shape well and don’t lose a lot of moisture. Braeburn apples are also one of the best-keeping apples and are slow to turn brown when sliced.
