Our Pears.
More than 3,000 different kinds of pears are grown around the world. The pears we grow at CAPE have all been carefully selected for their consistently high quality, attractive appearance, and, above all, their sweet and juicy taste.
These pretty pears are named after the German word for trout, because they have colorful skin covered with little red speckles. They’re a bite-sized pear, perfect for snacks and lunchboxes. Their smooth texture and spicy cinnamon taste also pairs well with cheese. Forelles change colour when they ripen, so you’ll know they’re ready to eat when their bright green skin starts to turn yellow. Forelles are thought to have originated in Germany in the 1600s, and are now grown all over the world.
This Australian-bred pear was originally grown in 1896 by Charles Packham, and became so popular that it’s also known as Packham’s Triumph. These bulbous, wide-bottomed pears learn slightly to one side. Their green skin is covered in tiny russet speckles and ripens to a light yellow. These fruit are delicious eaten fresh, as they’re among the sweetest and juiciest of pears. They’re very versatile and are also ideal for cooking, baking, poaching and canning. Try them sautéed with butter, brown sugar and cinnamon, poached in red wine, or as stuffing for a pork tenderloin.
These gorgeous orange-red pears are proudly South African, and are a cross between Forelle and Bon Rouge pears. They have a traditional stubby pear shape and their smooth, pale flesh has a soft, juicy texture and sweet taste. They’re lovely to snack on fresh, but also suitable for cooking. These special fruits are becoming increasingly popular in Europe.
